Labiaplasty

What Is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure designed to alter the labia minora and/or labia majora, the folds of skin surrounding the vulva. The labia minora is a term used to describe the inner lips, whereas the labia majora are used to describe the outer lips. Most commonly, this surgery is performed to reduce the size of the labia minora to relieve discomfort or to achieve a desired aesthetic appearance. It can help address issues such as pain during physical activities, discomfort from clothing friction, or self-consciousness during intimate moments. The procedure usually involves reshaping or trimming the labial tissue and is performed under local or general anesthesia. Most commonly, Dr. Amaka performs this procedure under local anesthesia in the office.

Our board-certified Nashville and Brentwood plastic surgeon, Dr. Nneamaka “Amaka” Nwubah, offers numerous different vaginal rejuvenation options to help patients feel more comfortable, confident, and fulfilled.

How Is Labiaplasty Performed?

The nature of the labiaplasty procedure differs on the technique used. Generally speaking, there are two primary methods employed: trim and wedge techniques.

  1. Trim Technique: The trim approach to labiaplasty involves removing excess labial tissue by “trimming” along the edge of the labia minora, directly reducing its size to more comfortably tuck within the labia majora.
  2. Wedge Technique: The wedge technique involves removing a pie-shaped piece of tissue from the labia minora, maintaining the natural border but reducing the overall volume. This technique can preserve more of the natural contour and color of the labia edges.

During your consultation with Dr. Amaka, she can review the pros and cons of each technique in greater detail, and provide personalized guidance regarding which technique may be right for you.

Labiaplasty is typically performed under either local or general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. Post-surgery, patients typically experience swelling and discomfort for a few days. Most patients are able to return to work and regular activities within about a week. That said, complete healing may take up to six weeks. Dr. Amaka recommends abstaining from sexual activity and rigorous physical activities during the recovery period to ensure proper healing.
